EUFIC is a non-profit organisation which provides science-based information on nutrition and health and food safety and quality to the media, health and nutrition professionals, educators and opinion leaders, in a way that promotes consumer understanding.
In response to the public's increasing need for credible, science-based information on the nutritional quality and safety of foods, EUFIC's mission is to enhance the public's understanding of such issues and to raise consumers' awareness of the active role they play in safe food handling and choosing a well-balanced and healthy diet.
With its offices located in Brussels (Belgium), EUFIC counts on and liaises with a European network to enhance the impact and outreach of its communication instruments and programmes in other countries. EUFIC actively participates in European initiatives together with the European Commission Directorate Generals for Research (DG Research) and for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO), where it contributes to a number of projects as a research and dissemination partner.
EUFIC publishes a regular newsletter, FOOD TODAY, highlighting subjects of current interest and issues periodic reviews and leaflets on specific subjects. FOOD TODAY is distributed to about 50,000 scientists, educators, media and other communication multipliers. The printed copies of the newsletter are printed in English, French, German and Spanish (distribution 10,000 copies). The electronic version is translated into another 7 languages (e.g. Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Slovak,) (distribution 40,000 copies). EUFIC also uses new technologies such as podcasts and webinars to disseminate key messages quickly and efficiently. All material can be accessed free of charge at www.eufic.org and in a range of European languages.
EUFIC is supported by companies of the European food and drinks industries, and receives funding from the European Commission on a project basis.
